As membership grew there was a need to increase other sporting activities and expand the golf section. With a one for one support from the State Government, the Club embarked on an extension programme with the construction of a new golfers' lounge, four tennis courts, four squash courts, a three table billiard room, a multi-purpose hall and new changing rooms. The total cost was RM 3 million of which one moiety was paid by members by way of a development fund and the balance by the State Government.

In November 1984, His Majesty Sultan Iskandar bestowed Royal Status on the Club and the name was changed to Royal Johor Country Club.

Being the only 18 hole golf course, Royal Johor Country Club was and still remains to be a popular venue for both amateur and professional tournaments.

The Johor Amateur Open was inaugurated in 1973 and the Club played host to this tournament for over 25 years before it moved to other venues. The Royal Johor Invitational Open Championship was initiated in 2002 where all the top amateur golfers from the region and afar came to compete. Royal Johor Country Club also hosted the Pan West Malaysian Amateur Open 2003 and will be hosting the Malaysian National Inter-team Championship in August 2006.

In 1977, the Club hosted the first professional golf tournament which was the Dunlop Masters. Tasek Utara Golf Club was the first club in the region to sponsor and host its own professional tournament. In 1984, it sponsored the Tasek Utara Golf Classic with a prize money of RM 50,000. This was increased to RM 100,000 the following year under the new name - Royal Johor Golf Classic. In 1988, the prize money was increased to a record RM 500,000, which was then the richest tournament in the country, with Kumpulan Mados being the main sponsor. Another achievement was recorded in 1985 when a total of five professional tournaments were held namely:- Kosaido Malaysian Ladies Open, Royal Johor Golf Classic, PFP Golf Classic, B & H Malaysia/Singapore match Play and Maruman Classic. Royal Johor Country Club was also the venue for the Hale Irwin/ Aioki tournament sponsored by Benson & Hedges and the US$300,000 Iskandar Johor Open 2007, sponsored by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority and sanctioned by the Asian Tour.

In 1991, at the command of His Majesty, a Course Development Committee was set up to upgrade the golf course. A leading golf course designer, Ms. Max Wexler Consultant Pte. Ltd was appointed for the task.

The upgrading involved:-
a) renovation of all putting greens and returfing them with Bermuda Tifdwarf
b) construction of new tee boxes
c) construction of 6 additional lakes
d) installation of sprinkler system

The renovation was completed in 1993 at a total cost of RM 6 million of which His Majesty donated RM 1 million towards the said cost and the balance was paid from members' funds and from other donors.

Further clubhouse upgrading took place in 1995 at a cost of RM 2.5 million. It involved the relocation of the golfer's lounge, a new air conditioned reception area, a new administration office and fully air-conditioned changing rooms. Two new half-way houses were built in 2003. A fully lighted 36 bay driving range was erected in 2005 and in the same year the swimming pool was upgraded with modern facilities.

Course records
The men's course record for professionals is 65 which was set by M. Marimuthu of Singapore in 1986. The amateur course record of 68 was set by Suffian Tan and Harun Ishak during the 1985 Johor Open.
